Alfred was born on April 11, 1930 at the rural Stacyville home of John N. and Mary (Gerber) Hemann. Alfred attended Visitation Catholic School and graduated from there in 1948. He farmed with his father until he joined the United States Army in May 1953, serving his country in Fort Richardson, Alaska. He was honorably discharged in March 1955.

Alfred married his sweetheart, Darlene Thome, on June 14, 1955 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Johnsburg, MN. Together they raised 9 children. He was a dairy and crop farmer until 1990 when he became ill with an auto-immune disorder. While battling his disorder, Alfred designed a handicapped-accessible home to be built in Stacyville upon their retirement from the farm. They moved into this home in September 1993.

During his lifetime, Alfred served the Visitation Catholic Church in many capacities including Church Council President, choir member, lay minister and helping with small jobs and remodeling projects. He was a member of the Forte Milers Barbershop Chorus for 43 years, serving as president for several years. He was a member of The Old-Fashioned Way quartet. Alfred was a member of the Mitchell County Extension Council. He enjoyed hosting family reunions for many years at the original John & Mary Hemann farm. Alfred developed a passion for woodworking, making quilt stands, wall shelves and children’s toys, all of which are enjoyed by his children and grandchildren.

Alfred is survived by his wife, Darlene, of nearly 64 years and nine children and their spouses, Mary (James) Kleinwort, St. Ansgar; John (Sherry) Hemann, Stacyville; Chuck (Paula) Hemann, Guttenberg; Germaine Marzen, Mason City; Audrey (Galen) Barker, Little Cedar; Roger (Kim) Hemann, Stacyville; Jerry (Melanie) Hemann, Chaska, MN; Myrna Jorgensen, St. Ansgar, and Rita (Brian) Pearce, Blaine, MN.
