Obituary

Carol Johnson, 83, died unexpectedly on Saturday, September 7, 2019 at her home in Northwood. Visitation will be Tuesday, September 10 at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home in Northwood with family present from 5-7 p.m. Services will be Wednesday, September 11 at 11 a.m. at Deer Creek Lutheran Church, rural Carpenter.

Carol Rae Read was born to Weldon and Viola Read on February 7, 1936 in Webster City. She attended South Hamilton grade school before the family moved to a farm east of Northwood in 1948. She graduated with honors from country school and went to Northwood High School where she graduated in 1954 and married her high school sweetheart, Allan Johnson, on July 16, 1955 at Deer Creek Lutheran Church. Their 64-year marriage was blessed with seven children who were Carol’s greatest pride and joy, bested only by the 15 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren who were to follow.

She was a staunch supporter of all of her kids, grandkids and great grandkids’ activities and attended more football, basketball, wrestling and cross country and track meets than can be counted. Another great passion was county extension and 4-H, as she encouraged her seven children and helped with county fair projects for more than 20 years. She continued her work with 4-H youth as an employee of Iowa State Extension in Worth and Cerro Gordo counties for 10 years. One of her greatest joys was attending county and state fairs. Even after a fall this spring, she still made the effort to spend time at the Worth County Fair, the Sac County Fair, the Mitchell County Fair and the Iowa State Fair.

Carol was a strong supporter of Allan’s love for the cattle business through which they built so many friendships. The couple was inducted into the Worth County Cattlemen Hall of Fame in 2012, and spent many hours organizing meals for the junior association breed show as well as judging proficiency contests at regional and national junior breed shows.

Carol was a selfless caregiver to Allan’s mother, Mary, for several years until her passing in 2010. Carol’s mother, Viola moved in with them in 2015 where she lived comfortably until her death in 2016. Carol was an active member of Deer Creek Lutheran Church in Carpenter and was a WELCA group leader for many years.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents; her infant brother Jimmie, baby sister Mary Alice, and brother Bill.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband Allan, and children Mark Johnson and wife Pam, Greg Johnson, Wendy Henrichs and husband Todd, Kris Keene and husband Dave, Paula Buenger and husband Joel, Scott Johnson and wife Lisa, and Laurie Kenny and husband Kurt.

15 grandchildren: Matt Johnson (Melissa), Brad Johnson, Leah Johnson, Trent Johnson (Allison), Danielle Gathercole (Michael), Grady Henrichs (Abbey), Chad Keene (Dani), Brent Keene (Leah), Jenna Keene, Andrew Buenger (fiance’ Kaitlyn), Kyle Johnson (Jodi), Holly Johnson (fiance Mark Hutchinson), Jason Kenny, Zach Kenny and Rachel Kenny.

15 great grandchildren: Harper Johnson, Colton and Kaydee Crumbaugh; James Gathercole; Lucy Johnson; Benton, Lily and Charlotte Keene; Gracen and Josie Keene; Ayden, Jaycee and Aria Johnson; Keegan Hutchinson and Bennett Jeske.

Sister-in-law Gail Read, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Neil and Judy Johnson and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.
