Obituary

Francis John Hommez “Gizz” passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 9th, 2019. He was born in Osage Iowa on October 4th, 1932 to Camiel and Irma (Verbeke) Hommez. He attended several country schools and St. Ansgar grade school. He later went to Osage High School and graduated in 1950.

Francis married Inez Stromley on December 28th, 1955. They made their home southwest of Stacyville and farmed crops and livestock for 54 years before retiring in 2008. While farming, he also worked at Deckers packing plant in Mason City for 10 years.

He had a deep respect for God’s gifts to this earth, and displayed this in the way he cared for his farmland, his animals, and his family. He instilled his remarkable work ethic into each one of his children.

He enjoyed dancing and visiting with friends and family when going out to dinner or when attending Sacred Heart Church in Osage or St. John’s Church in Johnsburg. He was an avid sports fan, especially the University of Iowa Hawkeyes, the Minnesota Vikings, the Minnesota Twins, and the St. Louis Cardinals. He loved teasing his grandkids and great grandkids in St. Ansgar and the Cedar Rapids area even though he didn’t know where everyone was going in that “darn city”. After retiring from farming, he continued to enjoy working outside in his shop on his many projects or in the garden.

Francis is survived by his wife, Inez; two daughters Sandra Eberling(Roger) of St Ansgar, Beckie Countryman (Tony) of Tipton, one son, Mark Hommez (Angie) of St Ansgar; a son in law, Paul Martin of Cedar Rapids; four grandchildren, Jason Eberling (Marjorie),  Kristin Linnell (Justin), Kerra Martin, and Matt Lukemyres; four great grandchildren, Mikaela and Jacob Eberling, Hunter and Cohen Linnell; and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents Camiel and Irma; two brothers, Louis Hommez and Joseph Hommez; four sisters, Mary Flasco, Lena Krebsbach, Julia Hoover and Bertha Robinson; and a daughter Debra Martin of Cedar Rapids.

Francis “Gizz” will be remembered as a hard working man. He provided for his family and cared for the land passed down to him. Friends and family alike will remember his sarcastic humor. He will be alive in our memory and missed by those who knew and loved him. As his granddaughter put it “we’re sure going to miss that loveable ol’ cuss.”
