After high school, he worked at the foundry in Albert Lea, spent several years farming, and then started work for the Hormel Company in Fremont, NE. He retired from there after thirty years and then moved back to Northwood in the fall of 2010 buying his parents acreage west of town fulfilling his promise to his parents. It was also extremely important to him to keep the same phone number they had.

Gary enjoyed collecting antique tractors especially favoring the John Deere. He participated in several local tractor rides and the Northwood parade. His favorite music was country music and he loved going to coffee with his friends in the morning. He will be remembered by his loved ones and friends for his caring manner and sense of humor. He was loved by many and will be greatly missed.

Gary is survived by his daughter Shelley Figueroa of Baytown, TX and his daughter Angela Obermeyer of Albert Lea, MN. Also by his brother Leon Olson of Northwood, IA, his sister Janice Faivre of Cottage Grove, WI, his sister Marilyn Dahlby of Lakeville, MN and special friend Jonilyn Coleman of Northwood.
