LaVerne Ernest Nelson was born on November 11, 1927, in Mitchell County, Iowa, to Ernest and Laura (Hackbarth) Nelson. He was baptized, confirmed, and a life-long member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar.

LaVerne was a resident of Mitchell County, Iowa, his entire life. LaVerne was an army veteran. During the summer of 1956, LaVerne met Grace Duncomb and she became his wife the following year on June 2, 1957. They made their home on a farm near St. Ansgar and were blessed with three sons, Kenneth, Russell, and Alan.

LaVerne was active and enjoyed many things during his 92 years. Farming was his passion his entire life. He took his family on many memorable trips. He and Grace continued to travel and appreciated the beauty of our country. Together they spent many winters in Gulf Shore, Alabama. LaVerne was also an avid fisherman and enjoyed spending time with his fishing buddies. He taught all of his grandkids how to fish and how to play cribbage and therefore spent many hours together doing so.

He shared his strong faith with his family who now find comfort in knowing he is with our Lord and Savior.
