Margaret Gene Berge was born September 30, 1924 at the Rustad family home near Northwood, the daughter of Reuben and Mae (Johnson) Rustad. She was baptized and confirmed at the North Shell Rock Lutheran Church. Northwood. Growing up on the family farm, Margaret attended school at Grove No. 3 through sixth grade and graduated from Northwood in 1942. She continued her education at Waldorf College and then helped the war effort by working for Boeing as a “Rosie the Riveter” in Seattle, Washington. Margaret also worked for Bell Telephone and Carroll George, Inc. for several years.

Margaret married Alvin Berge on March 28, 1948 in Northwood. For a majority of their married life they lived on a farm east of Northwood where they were blessed with four children. Together they farmed together for about 40 years before retiring and moving to town.

Margaret was known for her gift of making beautiful quilts with her delicate hand sewing work. She found great joy in sharing her quilting talents she created and gifted with love to her family and friends. She assisted the First Lutheran Quilters for many years sewing thousands of quilts for missions and the community members. Margaret was also known for her love of baking Norwegian goodies and the most delicious homemade bread. Margaret was an active, faithful member of First Lutheran Church and served as a Sunday School teacher, Altar Guild, choir member, and was a member of various circles. Most of all, family was Margaret’s greatest love. She was a cherished mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, and aunt. Her kindness, compassion and love will be missed forever.
